FORMER EVELEIGH RAILWAY WORKSHOPS INTERPRETATION PLAN EXHIBITION

The RWA has engaged 3D Projects in association with Artscape and Only Human to prepare an Interpretation Plan for the Eveleigh Rail Yards Precinct. The specific aims of the Plan are to:

  • Guide and facilitate interpretation of the site’s heritage significance as a conservation process designed to sustain the site’s authenticity and character;
  • Identify existing audiences and visitor experiences on the Eveleigh site, including workers, neighbours resident in the district, railway tourists and school groups as well as quantify opportunities to enhance visitor numbers and experiences in each of these categories;
  • Achieve enhanced public understanding of the history of the area and its significance to residents, workers and visitors by fostering active links with the community, as well as with tourism, education and recreation activities;
  • Ensure interpretive devices and their content have the potential to engage and provoke public interest, are accessible, sustainable (in relation to maintenance, evaluation and review) reversible (in relation to heritage fabric) and compatible with the sites for which they are chosen.

As part of the preparation of the Interpretation Plan for the former Eveleigh Rail Yards a community consultation field day was held on 30 October 2010 at Innovation Plaza, Australian Technology Park. A Field Day Report containing details of the day’s activities is currently in preparation and will be available for download on this website shortly.

The DRAFT Interpretation Plan is on exhibition between 9 March and 6 April 2011. Download a copy of the DRAFT Interpretation Plan

Make a submission in relation to the Interpretation Plan to reception@rwa.nsw.gov.au.

Submissions close Wednesday 6 April 2011 at 5pm.

About the Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce

The Redfern Waterloo Heritage Taskforce was established in 2009 to recognise the broad extent of local heritage in Redfern Waterloo that has significant value for both the local community and the wider public. Its purpose is to identify opportunities for the active conservation, interpretation and, where appropriate, the adaptive reuse of the cultural, natural and archaeological heritage of the Redfern Waterloo area.

The Taskforce seeks to increase community awareness, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the existing heritage and stimulate greater community initiative and participation in efforts to conserve it. Download the complete RWHT Terms of Reference.

EVELEIGH STEERING COMMITTEE

Under the auspices of the RWHT the Eveleigh Steering Committee (ESC) has been established to recognise the significant cultural and social heritage and history of the former Eveleigh railway workshops themselves, and the significance of the Eveleigh site to the character of the Redfern-Waterloo area. The ESC membership comprises a broad range of community representatives as well as representatives of ATP and the RWA. The group meets monthly and is open to all who wish to participate.
